What will GOP leaders do if Romney is within 200 pts. of McCain after Feb. 5?

On February 6 there will be a gnashing of teeth in Washington. Nice words by Bob Dole, Bill Bennett, and a few others will not make conservatives happy with/willing to vote for McCain.

Would an extremeley conservative running mate help?

Antonin Scalia? Mike Huckabee? Charlie Crist? Mitt Romney? Fred Thompson? Tim Pawlenty (MN Gov.)?

The results today will be interesting, but even if Romney doesn't run a close 2nd the issue will be the same; how to attract conservatives to a McCain ticket. The Republicans have zero chance in November without them.

For the Democrats, how do they merge the Clinton and Obama camps? That seems easier to me since policy matters don't get in the way. Speaking nice and getting along (and crying, if you are Hillary) are the only keys to getting the nomination.
